Briquettes

Briquettes have a high energy density, and a lower moisture content, typically below 5%. By having a greater density than firewood, wood briquettes will burn even more efficiently and produce more heat per unit weight.

A typical pallet of wood briquettes contains around 5,000 kWh of energy, which is 50% more than the energy content of a large crate of kiln dried firewood. However, the cost of a pallet of briquettes is comparable to the cost of a large crate of firewood. This makes wood briquettes a very cost-effective way to heat your home.

Overall, wood briquettes are a great choice for homeowners who are looking for a clean, convenient, and efficient way to heat their homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Wood Briquettes?

Wood briquettes (also known as heat logs, eco logs, fire logs or hot logs) are compact, high-density fuel blocks made from kiln dried, recycled wood materials. With moisture levels as low as 6–10%, briquettes deliver more heat, longer burn times and less mess compared to traditional firewood. Ideal for UK homes, their uniform shape makes them easy to handle, stack and store, helping you heat your space efficiently, sustainably, and with less effort.

How Do Wood Briquettes Compare to Traditional Firewood?

If you want more heat with fewer refuels, briquettes are a smart choice. Customers love them because they:

  • Produce up to 50% more heat per kg than traditional firewood
  • Ignite easily and burn for longer
  • Generate minimal smoke and ash
  • Offer a predictable, steady heat output
  • Stack neatly and take up less storage space

Are Briquettes Environmentally Friendly?

Absolutely. Our briquettes are considered a low impact, carbon lean fuel because they are made from recycled wood waste such as sawdust, shavings and offcuts that would otherwise be discarded. Every White Horse Energy briquette is Ready to Burn certified, so you’re guaranteed clean burning with reduced emissions and full compliance with UK clean air standards.

What Are Briquettes Made From?

Briquettes can be produced from a range of recycled materials, each offering distinct burn characteristics:

  • Hardwood: Longer burn times and steady heat
  • Softwood: Quick ignition and a faster burn with a strong burst of initial heat
  • Mixed Wood: Balanced performance with easy lighting and good burn duration
  • Charcoal: Excellent for grilling and barbecuing thanks to their intense, reliable heat
  • Sawdust and Wood Chips: Clean-burning, cost-effective, eco-friendly
  • Agricultural Residues: Materials like rice husks, coconut shells, and coffee husks are increasingly being used to create briquettes

Regardless of the material, briquettes offer excellent efficiency when kept dry and used correctly.

Where Can I Use Wood Briquettes?

Briquettes can be used in most closed wood burning and multi fuel stoves, as well as open fires, fire pits, chimineas and pizza ovens. Always check the manual to confirm suitability for manufactured solid fuels, and start with smaller loads until you understand how briquettes burn in your particular appliance.

How do I Light Wood Briquettes?

Light briquettes just as you would traditional firewood. Start with kindling and a firelighter, then add 1 - 3 briquettes once you have a good bed of flames. Avoid overloading at first – allow enough airflow for your briquettes to ignite and burn cleanly before gradually adding more.

Can I Mix Briquettes with Firewood?

Yes, you can. Start your fire with kiln dried logs, then add briquettes for an extended burn and steady heat throughout the evening. This approach blends the flame and charm of logs with the efficiency and long burn duration of briquettes.

How Should I Store My Briquettes?

To keep your briquettes performing at their best, store them in a dry, well-ventilated area to maintain their low moisture content.

  • Store indoors if possible, off the ground and sheltered from damp.
  • If stored outside, use a waterproof cover and ensure good airflow.
  • Avoid damp or excessive humidity, as this can cause briquettes to expand or crumble.

Proper storage ensures maximum heat output and reliable burn times. See our full guide here: Briquette Storage.

How Many Briquettes Will I Need?

This depends on your appliance size, home insulation and how often you burn. Small to medium-sized stoves typically use 3–6 briquettes per burn, so many households opt for a full pallet during UK winters.

Because briquettes contain more energy per kg than logs, you generally need fewer of them to achieve the same heat output.

How will My Briquettes Be Delivered?

We offer free standard delivery across most of the UK. Your briquettes will be delivered on a pallet via a tail-lift lorry and pallet truck within 2-5 working days, depending on your location and stock availability. You can also select a delivery date at checkout, for added convenience. You don’t need to be home for delivery, but the site must be flat, hard standing (no grass, gravel or kerbs) and accessible.
