Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose kiln dried birch firewood?

Kiln Dried Birch is the easiest hardwood to light, giving you a bright, lively flame and fierce heat within minutes. It burns faster than denser woods such as ash or oak, so it's perfect for quick evening fires, bringing a stove up to temperature or enjoying a vibrant flame display.

Our birch logs are sustainably sourced, kiln dried to below 20% moisture and Ready to Burn certified, so they burn cleanly and efficiently straight from delivery. Use them in wood burners, multi-fuel stoves, open fires, firepits, pizza ovens and chimineas.

How does birch compare to Ash, Oak and Premium Hardwood?

Birch gives the quickest light and brightest flame, but a shorter burn than denser hardwoods like ash and oak.

Birch: best for fast lighting and instant heat
Ash: an excellent all-rounder that's easy to light with long, even burns
Oak: long, slow burning with high heat output, but slower to ignite
Premium Hardwood: a curated mix that lights easily and burns long and steady
Many customers use birch to get the fire going, then add oak or premium hardwood for a longer burn. See our Side by Side Burning Comparison for more detail.

Is your Kiln Dried Birch Ready to Burn and suitable for smoke control areas?

Yes. Our Kiln Dried Birch Firewood is Ready to Burn certified, meaning it's independently tested to a moisture content below 20% and complies with UK regulations for domestic wood fuel. In a smoke control area, you can burn it in a DEFRA-exempt appliance. Low moisture logs light more easily, burn hotter and produce far less smoke, tar and soot than wet or unseasoned wood, which is better for your stove, your chimney and local air quality. Always follow your appliance manufacturer's instructions and local guidance.

What crate sizes does kiln dried birch come in?

Kiln Dried Birch comes in Standard, Full and Max Crates, so there's an option whether you light the odd evening fire or rely on wood as your main heat source.

Crate	Loose volume	Stacked volume	Crate size (H × W × L)
Standard Crate	1.1m³	0.6m³	0.82m × 1.10m × 0.85m
Full Crate	2.0m³	1.2m³	1.20m × 1.14m × 1.08m
Max Crate	3.34m³	2.0m³	2.00m × 1.15m × 1.08m

Max Crate deliveryThe Max Crate is very tall and heavy and arrives on an 18-tonne vehicle, so the unloading area must be flat, hard standing (no grass, gravel or kerbs) and accessible.

Loose volume is the UK industry and legal standard: it measures logs loosely tipped into a container. Stacked volume measures the same logs neatly packed, so it's always the smaller figure. Find out more in Loose vs Stacked Firewood Explained.
